An investment moves beyond the announcement stage

President Cyril Ramaphosa officially opened Vedanta Zinc International’s Gamsberg Phase II concentrator in Aggeneys on Friday, 16 October 2026. The expansion, reported at roughly R10 billion, is one of the country’s largest recent mining investments and a tangible addition to productive infrastructure rather than a new pledge awaiting construction.

What has actually changed at the mine

According to the Presidency, the project doubles Gamsberg’s annual ore-handling capacity from about four million to eight million tonnes. It lifts the operation’s designed zinc-in-concentrate production capacity to approximately 500,000 tonnes a year. Nameplate capacity is a production capability, not a guarantee that every year will deliver that amount.

Jobs and local economic expectations

Government previously estimated that the expanded operation would sustain between 800 and 1,000 operational jobs, with recruitment largely from the Northern Cape. That is an expectation about the operating workforce, not a claim that all those jobs were newly created in October. Local procurement, technical training and dependable municipal services will influence how widely the benefits spread.

The smelter is the unfinished chapter

Ramaphosa used the inauguration to argue that South Africa should capture more value from its mineral resources. Vedanta has ambitions for local zinc smelting and refining, but the proposed smelter is not part of the completed Phase II concentrator. A separate commercial investment decision would depend on affordable electricity, infrastructure and other conditions.

The industrial test ahead

The Gamsberg expansion offers a rare example of a major investment proceeding through construction into operation. The harder test is whether reliable power, transport and skilled suppliers can support the next stage of beneficiation in the Namakwa region. Until that happens, the difference between producing zinc concentrate and manufacturing refined metal remains central to the story.
