Johannesburg’s year-end live-music calendar just picked up a heavyweight R&B date. Once Upon A Time in Joburg has confirmed Lucky Daye, Smino and Baby Rose for its return to the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia on Saturday, 5 December 2026.
The official ticket listing confirms all three names, with more artists still to be announced. The event is scheduled from noon to 6pm and is billed around R&B, soul and hip-hop, alongside food, culture and immersive spaces. It is an 18+ event.
The announcement matters because the booking is unusually coherent rather than simply large. Lucky Daye brings contemporary R&B songwriting and a catalogue built for live performance; Smino sits between rap, funk, soul and melodic experimentation; Baby Rose brings a lower-register, neo-soul voice that has made her one of the genre’s most distinctive contemporary singers. Together, the three names give the bill a clear point of view.
That fits the identity Once Upon A Time in Joburg has been building since its 2024 launch. The locally produced series has focused on R&B and neo-soul, previously bringing international acts including Xavier Omär, GoldLink, DVSN and, earlier this year, SiR to South African audiences.
For Johannesburg, the December booking is also another sign that specialist live-music audiences can support programming beyond the broad festival model. Instead of treating R&B as a side stage or a few names on a mixed bill, Once Upon A Time has made the genre — and the community around it — the event itself.
Tickets are already listed through Howler. With more artists promised, the December programme is not complete yet, but its first announcement is strong enough to put the date on the city’s cultural calendar now.
