The city’s design process goes public

Most people encounter architecture only when the building is finished. Open Studios reverses that sequence. On Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 October, Cape Town architecture, interior, landscape and urban-design practices will invite visitors into the places where drawings, models and material decisions are made. Entry is free and the organisers say no RSVP is required for the general open-studio visits.

The 2026 edition spans more than 30 studios in five neighbourhoods, grouped into clusters that can be explored on foot where distances allow. The premise is simple but significant: a city can become easier to understand when its makers explain their process rather than only displaying the finished result.

Two evenings, two routes

According to the published programme, Wednesday 14 October covers 21 practices across De Waterkant, the central business district and Gardens. Thursday 15 October turns towards 10 practices in Woodstock, Salt River and Observatory. Among the names listed are dhk, SAOTA, Wolff Architects, GAPP Architects & Urban Designers and several smaller studios. The mix matters: a large commercial practice and a small experimental team can respond to the same city in very different ways.

Visitors should check the official map before setting out, choose a walkable cluster and allow time to ask questions. What happens before a building gets planning approval? Who decides which materials are affordable? How do teams think about heat, accessibility and the lives of people who use a place? A conversation at a model table can be more revealing than a photograph of a completed façade.

Why the open door matters

Architecture can seem like a closed profession: technical language, private clients and expensive finished projects are its public face. An open studio does not solve those barriers. It does, however, create a useful opening for students, neighbours and curious residents to meet practitioners and see how a design argument is assembled.

This is also a reminder that the built environment is never only about appearance. A street corner, a shared courtyard or a public entrance determines how people move, wait and meet. Open Studios gives visitors an opportunity to bring those everyday experiences into the room where decisions begin.

Plan the visit

Open Studios runs 14–15 October 2026 across Cape Town. The event is free; routes and participating studios are listed by the organiser. Check the latest studio hours and map before travelling, and do not assume every site is within walking distance of the next.
