Pan Afrikan Design Week returns to South Africa from 21 to 24 October with a question that deliberately pushes beyond aesthetics: How do we design to thrive?

Convened by the Pan Afrikan Design Institute with Open Design Afrika as local host, the gathering at Workshop17 in the V&A Waterfront brings designers into conversation with educators, entrepreneurs, policymakers, cultural practitioners and community builders.

The programme makes the argument that design is not only what happens to a chair, logo or building. Day one deals with trust, identity, indigenous wisdom and place. Day two moves through food systems, community development and social-impact innovation. Day three turns to education, AI, biomimicry and future-fit skills.

That framing is useful in a continent where many design problems are systemic before they are visual. A beautiful interface cannot repair an inaccessible service; a polished building cannot create belonging by itself.

The conference runs through Friday 23 October, followed by a community and cultural learning experience on Saturday 24 October. In-person capacity is limited, with selected sessions also available online.
