Tethered Ground opened in Village Deep this weekend with a deliberately broad definition of contemporary South African creativity. The exhibition gathers 18 emerging creatives across art, fashion and sound, using home, identity, memory and belonging as its connective tissue.
Running from 3 to 13 October at 15 Hulbert Road, the show is presented by Woven Garnet in partnership with OOVOOKOO. Its premise treats land and environment not as scenery but as forces that shape identity and memory.
That cross-disciplinary structure matters. Young creative practice in South Africa rarely stays inside the old institutional boxes: fashion borrows from installation, sound becomes spatial, and visual art increasingly moves through performance, clothing and digital culture.
The exhibition’s strongest proposition may therefore be its format. Instead of asking emerging practitioners to resemble an established gallery category, it gives different mediums permission to sit beside one another.
For Johannesburg audiences, Tethered Ground is also a reason to look south of the city centre for a creative conversation that is often assumed to live elsewhere. The exhibition is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 until 13 October.
