During Milan Fashion Week, Fondazione Sozzani is presenting “Resonance in the Room,” a collection by Paris-based designer Tidjane Tall from 25 to 27 September. Tall’s starting point is unusually intimate: La Boule Noire, the Ivory Coast cabaret founded by his grandfather Baïdy Tall in the 1970s.

The collection translates that family history into sculptural clothing rather than reproducing the club literally. Fondazione Sozzani describes hair becoming feathers, embroidery carrying stories, bags shifting into necklaces and eveningwear moving into everyday life.

Tall studied at Institut Français de la Mode after leaving accountancy, and his work has since been recognised by the 2026 I:C Fondazione Sozzani Award at ITS Contest. The award positions him within a talent platform that has historically helped surface designers who later moved into major fashion houses and independent labels.

The more interesting question is what happens when African memory enters European fashion institutions on its own terms. Tall is not treating heritage as a mood board of generic symbols. The source is a specific person, place and social world — a West African nightclub remembered as a space of elegance and freedom.

That specificity is the strength. In an industry constantly mining “inspiration,” Resonance in the Room suggests a more grounded route: start with an archive you are actually accountable to, then design forward from it.
