A Sunday-morning emergency
About 400 people were displaced when a fire swept through the Myitshe section of Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay, Cape Town, in the early hours of Sunday, 11 October 2026. The City of Cape Town’s preliminary assessment recorded approximately 80 informal structures destroyed and four formal homes damaged. The numbers may change as registration and verification continue.
Fire and Rescue Services received the alarm at about 03:45. Engines from several Cape Town stations and additional water tankers were sent to the scene. Firefighters contained the blaze by 06:43, according to the City’s spokesperson Mark Bosch. No injuries or deaths had been reported in the official updates available by Monday morning.
Relief and damaged infrastructure
The fire damaged electricity and sanitation infrastructure, including two flush toilets, according to disaster-management updates reported by Cape Argus. These losses complicate the immediate recovery even for residents whose structures survived.
Disaster Risk Management and Informal Settlements Management officials are coordinating assessments and support. Gift of the Givers has been providing humanitarian assistance, with additional support being arranged through SASSA and other partners. Residents who wish to help should use verified channels operated by those organisations rather than unverified appeals circulating online.
What remains unknown
The cause of the fire has not been established. Some residents told Eyewitness News they suspected an electrical fault, but that account is not an official finding and should not be treated as one.
The emergency has renewed questions about the pace of housing delivery in Imizamo Yethu. Community activist Roscoe Jacobs called for clarity on the Phase 3 housing project and on support for affected families. The immediate priority remains safe access, accurate registration and emergency shelter; longer-term housing promises require separately verifiable delivery dates.
