Four lives lost after a memorial gathering

Four people have died after gunfire struck a group returning from a memorial service in Katlehong North, Ekurhuleni, on Tuesday evening, 13 October 2026. The initial police report recorded two deaths at the scene and five people taken to hospital. By Wednesday, two of those hospitalised had died, bringing the confirmed toll to four, with three others receiving treatment.

Police place the attack at approximately 18:50 on Sophangisa Street, after mourners left a service at Mogobeng Primary School for a member of a political party. Reporting by Eyewitness News and other outlets identifies some of the victims as members of the ANC Youth League. The precise circumstances that preceded the shooting are still being investigated.

A suspect is in custody — a motive is not confirmed

The South African Police Service says a suspect handed himself over after the shooting. Murder and attempted-murder allegations are being investigated, and the docket has been assigned to the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team. The suspect is expected to appear in court, but no finding of guilt has been made.

Investigators have not announced a motive. Police have explicitly cautioned against assuming the suspect’s party affiliation or presenting the incident as an established political assassination. The task team’s involvement reflects the circumstances requiring scrutiny; it is not itself proof of a political motive.

Children among the wounded

Eyewitness News reported that children were among those injured in the gunfire. Deputy Police Minister Polly Boshielo and Deputy Justice Minister Andries Nel visited the area and appealed for disagreements to be settled without violence.

The deaths have prompted questions about the safety of political gatherings ahead of the 4 November municipal elections. Those concerns are legitimate, but investigators still have to establish whether the shooting was targeted, connected to the earlier death being commemorated, or driven by another cause.

What happens next

The immediate tests are the court appearance, a verified account of the suspect’s actions and a police update on motive. CREATIVE KONG will not identify unconfirmed political affiliations or circulate unverified claims about what triggered the gunfire.

This report reflects police-confirmed information available by the morning of 15 October 2026. The fatality count or charges could change as the investigation progresses.
