Furniture at the scale of a building

A chair is a modest object compared with a house, but the decisions behind it can be remarkably similar. Where does the weight travel? How does material meet material? What happens when a strong visual line has to accommodate an actual body? MŪVEK and CVN are taking those questions into a focused exhibition at their De Waterkant studio as part of Design Week South Africa’s Cape Town programme.

Opening on 22 October, the presentation centres on four chairs from the MŪVEK collection. The organisers describe them as architectural objects, designed with attention to proportion, structure, construction and material. A chronological timeline of the studio’s work accompanies the pieces, so the exhibition is about a developing design language rather than four isolated products.

Two practices in one working room

MŪVEK’s furniture practice and CVN’s architectural work are linked through the same creative partnership. A 2025 VISI profile of the Napier Street studio identified János Cserháti and architect Chris van Niekerk as the people behind the shared space, and described a workplace intended for prototyping, conversation and making rather than a conventional retail showroom.

That context is important. The current exhibition is not simply an exercise in placing beautiful chairs under gallery lights. It is an invitation to notice the relationship between a building’s logic and an object’s construction, with the working studio itself providing the setting.

The body is the real test

Furniture must negotiate an unusually direct relationship with its user. A chair can appear sculptural in a photograph, but its proportions, surfaces and support become meaningful when someone sits down. Architecture faces a similar problem at a larger scale: drawings and renders must eventually answer to lived experience.

By bringing the two scales together, the exhibition offers a useful lens on contemporary South African design. Craft is not only a finish or a material story. It is also the chain of decisions that allows a concept to become something stable, repeatable and useful.

How to visit

The MŪVEK x CVN exhibition is at the first floor of 24 Napier Street, De Waterkant, Cape Town. The official programme lists 12:00–17:00 on 22–23 October, 10:00–17:00 on 24 October and 10:00–14:00 on 25 October. The organisers note that visitor numbers may be limited because the presentation is taking place in an active studio.

For people interested in design beyond the finished photograph, this is a particularly revealing format: four chairs, one timeline and a room where furniture and architecture are still being worked out.
