A fatal morning swim

A 65-year-old woman died after a shark attack near Orient Beach in KuGompo, formerly East London, on Tuesday morning, 20 October 2026. Eastern Cape police said officers attended the beach at approximately 07:00 and found the woman with serious injuries. Emergency efforts were unsuccessful.

Two beaches closed

Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality confirmed that Orient Beach and neighbouring Eastern Beach were closed following the incident. The municipality urged residents and visitors not to enter the water at the affected beaches and to comply with official safety notices. The closure is a public-safety measure, not a statement that every nearby beach has the same risk.

Police opened an inquest

Police opened an inquest to establish the circumstances of the death. Authorities had not publicly confirmed the shark species responsible at the time of reporting. Speculation about a particular species, or the causes of the encounter, would therefore go beyond the available evidence.

A community in mourning

The attack has shocked the local open-water swimming community. Associated Press reported that other swimmers responded after the woman signalled distress and helped bring her ashore. Tributes have described her as a committed swimmer and musician. The loss is personal to those who knew her, while the immediate public question is when the beaches can safely reopen.

What beachgoers should do

Beach users should treat the municipal closure as current until Buffalo City issues a verified reopening notice. Avoid swimming at Orient or Eastern Beach while the restrictions remain in place, follow lifeguards’ instructions at other beaches and avoid relying on social-media rumours for safety decisions. No reopening date was confirmed in the reports checked for this article.
